Ultrasonography is a safe and effective form of imaging that has been used by physicians for more than half a century to aid in diagnosis and guide procedures. Over the past two decades, ultrasound equipment has become more compact, higher quality, and less expensive, which has facilitated the growth of point-of-care ultrasonography — that is, ultrasonography performed and interpreted by the clinician at the bedside. In 2004, a conference on compact ultrasonography hosted by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) concluded that “the concept of an ‘ultrasound stethoscope’ is rapidly moving from the theoretical to reality.” This conference included representatives from 19 medical organizations; in November 2010, the AIUM hosted a similar forum attended by 45 organizations.1-3 Some medical schools are now beginning to provide their students with hand-carried ultrasound equipment for use during clinical rotations.4 Although ionizing radiation from computed tomographic (CT) scanning is increasingly recognized as a potentially major cause of cancer, ultrasonography has been used in obstetrics for decades, with no epidemiologic evidence of harmful effects at normal diagnostic levels.5,6 However, ultrasonography is a user-dependent technology, and as usage spreads, there is a need to ensure competence, define the benefits of appropriate use, and limit unnecessary imaging and its consequences.7-10 This article provides an overview of the history and current status of compact, point-of-care ultrasonography, with examples and discussion of its use.

Point-of-care Ultrasonography by Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physicians.

Emergency physicians have used point-of-care ultrasonography since the 1990 s. Pediatric emergency medicine physicians have more recently adopted this technology. Point-of-care ultrasonography is used for various scenarios, particularly the evaluation of soft tissue infections or blunt abdominal trauma and procedural guidance. To date, there are no published statements from national organizatio...

Point-of-Care Ultrasonography for Appendicitis Uncovers Two Alternate Diagnoses.

We present two cases of pediatric patients initially presenting with a clinical suspicion of acute appendicitis. In these cases, point-of-care ultrasonography was performed early in the patient's emergency department course, leading to alternate diagnoses. This article highlights a role for point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnoses of two alternate conditions that clinically mimic appendicitis:...

The effect of point-of- care ultrasonography on emergency department length of stay and CT utilization in children with suspected appendicitis

Background The role of clinician-performed ultrasonography for suspected appendicitis is controversial. Published data conclude that ultrasonography has high specificity to rule in the diagnosis of appendicitis with variable sensitivity to rule it out. Newer data suggest that point-of-care ultrasonography (PoCUS) may have similar test characteristics. This is the first study to examine the effe...

Point-of-care ultrasonography by pediatric emergency physicians. Policy statement.

Point-of-care ultrasonography is increasingly being used to facilitate accurate and timely diagnoses and to guide procedures. It is important for pediatric emergency physicians caring for patients in the emergency department to receive adequate and continued point-of-care ultrasonography training for those indications used in their practice setting. Emergency departments should have credentiali...

The Prevalence and Risk Factors of Venous Thrombosis among Hospitalized Patients: Are Wells Criteria Considered by Primary Care Physicians?

Background: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is one of the main causes of hospital mortality which can easily be prevented. Three para clinical methods are used to confirm the diagnosis of DVT, which include D-dimer test, venous color Doppler ultrasonography and venography. This study has focused on the prevalence of confirmed DVT in lower limbs based on venous color Doppler ultrason...
